We all know porn is huge on the Internet, but with all of the percentages and millions of people doing this or that, it’s easy to just let those numbers fly by. I stumbled upon a fascinating website that ranks the popularity of the Top 50 websites in the world.

Based on statistics that came out on May 1 this year, The Top 5 are exactly what you’d expect: Google, Facebook, YouTube, Amazon and Yahoo. Odds are you use one or more of those sites every day.

So what are the next three most popular websites in the United States? Pornhub, Xnxx and XVideos – all sites that deal ONLY in pornography.

That means that there are three porn sites that are individually more popular than Ebay, Twitter, Wikipedia, Reddit or Instagram.

Think about that for a second. All of those people you see taking selfies and posting them to Instagram or who say “I gotta retweet this”… well there are even more people than that at home watching porn, with a decent percentage getting addicted.

Another site, XHamster, ranks at No. 17, just above Netflix. That’s right. There are four sites that stream pornography that are more popular than Netflix.

Four of the Top 20 websites in the world are nothing but pornography. When you see a list of popular websites, and there isn’t any porn on it, know that whoever is presenting it is ignoring the porn and call them out on it. Ignoring the porn is how we got here.

  1. Alarming but far from surprising. The “Me, too” movement should direct their focus on porn as the main source of men developing the idea women are “fair game” for sexual harassment. It’s time obscenity laws start getting enforced again. Keep sounding the alarm!

    1. Well, unfortunately – or fortunately – obscenity laws are enforced. It’s just hard to determine what is or isn’t obscenity. And I’m actually OK with that. We need to return to parenting and social standards. I don’t think the government should get involved.

    2. Great article, I have one on the female perspective of porn addiction and what it’s like to be a female with that problem. I believe you’ve read it and we’ve chatted a bit about it but for those of you who may want a females side to it go check me out as well. Is it ok to post my blog here?

  2. I think this is a problem that is going to have subtle but ultimately very destructive effects on society. I agree, Joshua, that parenting and social standards are an issue. I think our current habit of focussing tightly on one aspect of ‘the problem’ doesn’t really take us very far, it just produces some temporary outrage and maybe pillories a few famous perpetrators. Crucifying Harvey Weinstein (whether he deserves it or not, and he probably does) will not stop sexual predators but it give the impression that we have ‘taken action’.

    1. You are so correct, but we live in an era (and maybe it’s always been the case and I’m just now paying attention to things other than myself) where a boogyman is needed to encapsulate our problems. Harvey Weinstein is probably both an ill person and one who deserves punishment. I certainly was both. But, let’s be honest, he just took the place of Tiger Woods. And somebody will take his place eventually. Society needs a sexual bad guy the way people who follow politics need a liberal or conservative bad guy to blame all of the worlds problems on.
I wonder if we really can do anything about this and if people really want to. I don’t believe most of the people watching Fox News or MSNBC at night want to fix the country’s problems. They just want to be told that their position is correct, that their thoughts have value and that the other people are wrong. Ask them to work to fix the problems they complain about and they’ll change the channel.
It feels good for “regular people” to decry the acts of Harvey Weinstein, but then statistically speaking, a big portion of them go home and masturbate to images of the very same people he’s accused of assaulting. I don’t think most people really care about this problem because while they’ll pay lip service to it being a scourge on society, it’s not a part of their daily life. They just need you to know they are righteous…righteously lazy.
